California Advances Auto Retail Protections Following FTC Rule Reversal

The Consumer Federation of America, alongside 32 other consumer advocacy organizations, backs the California Combating Auto Retail Scams (CARS) Act. This legislation aims to enhance protections for new and used vehicle buyers in California, including military members and legitimate car dealers. The CARS Act seeks to reduce the financial risks and increase affordability in car purchases and leases within the state. The push for this state-level legislation follows the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeal's split decision to overturn the Federal Trade Commission's CARS Rule, which had the potential to save consumers billions annually and significantly reduce time spent on car buying.
