Admiral Group to Sell U.S. Elephant Auto Insurance to J.C. Flowers
Admiral Group PLC, a UK-based insurer, has agreed to sell its U.S. motor insurance operations, including Elephant Insurance Co., to J.C. Flowers & Co., a private investment firm specializing in financial services.
The transaction, expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2025 subject to regulatory approval, represents a significant shift in ownership from the UK to the U.S. Elephant Insurance, founded in 2009 and headquartered in Henrico, Virginia, will now be under U.S.-based ownership.
This deal aligns with Admiral Group's strategic focus on growing its European businesses, including its UK-based Elephant brand. Elephant Insurance has shown robust growth with a 2023 projected revenue of $320 million and a customer base insuring around 56,000 vehicles locally, more than doubling since 2018.
The company improved its profitability with a $19.2 million profit in 2024, a turnaround from a $26.1 million loss in 2023. The sale follows Admiral's prior divestment in 2023 of Compare.com, reinforcing its exit from certain U.S. markets. J.C. Flowers & Co. plans to support Elephant Insurance's continued growth and maintain its culture during this new phase. Elephant's recent downsizing of its office footprint in Henrico signals operational adjustments accompanying the ownership transition.
This transaction highlights ongoing consolidation and realignment trends in the U.S. auto insurance market, driven by strategic portfolio optimization from international insurers and growth-focused investment firms.
