Highmark Health Reports Significant Operating Losses Amid Insurance Challenges
Highmark Health, headquartered in Pittsburgh, reported a significant $674 million operating loss in 2025, primarily driven by difficulties in its insurance division. Despite the challenges in its insurance operations, the company, which includes health plans and the Allegheny Health Network, noted improvements in its hospital operations, resulting in a net loss of $175 million for the year ending December 31, according to a March 24 statement.
Comparatively, in 2024, Highmark faced a $209 million operating loss but recorded $50 million in net income. The insurance segment alone incurred a $609 million operating loss in 2025, a marked increase from the $166 million loss in the previous year. During this period, operating revenue rose from $22 billion to $24.8 billion. To address the ongoing high demand and claims trends anticipated in 2026, Highmark has adjusted its pricing and product offerings to better meet market conditions and support recovery.
The Allegheny Health Network, with its 14 hospitals, achieved an operating income of $90 million in 2025, significantly reversing a $147 million loss from 2024. The network's total operating revenue increased from $5.1 billion to $5.7 billion, bolstered by $54 million in COVID-19 relief funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. This performance improvement of $237 million year-over-year is attributed to increased volumes and operational efficiencies.
Looking ahead, Highmark plans to expand through the pending acquisition of Heritage Valley Health System in Beaver, Pennsylvania, which will integrate with the Allegheny Health Network upon closing. Additionally, an affiliation with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City aims to conclude by March 31, integrating Missouri's largest nonprofit health insurer and its 1 million members with an annual revenue of $3 billion into Highmark's operations.
Highmark Health’s CFO and Treasurer, Carl Daley, highlighted, “Our scale is our strength, and the strategic affiliations we announced last year will broaden our reach and enhance access to care.”
