Consumer Reports 2026 Auto Brand Report: Subaru Tops, Tesla and EVs Show Mixed Reliability

Consumer Reports has released its 2026 Overall Brand Report Card, ranking Subaru as the top automotive brand for the second consecutive year, with BMW following as the runner-up and leading in the luxury segment. The report evaluates new and used vehicle reliability, owner satisfaction, and road-test performance based on testing of approximately 50 new models and extensive owner surveys covering 380,000 vehicles over 25 model years, making it Consumer Reports' most comprehensive study to date. Toyota secured the highest marks for vehicle reliability, fueled by strong performances from the Camry, Tundra, and Tacoma models, while Subaru held second place in reliability rankings. Tesla improved its standings, with Model Y and Model 3 overcoming previous build quality challenges, reaching their highest-ever ranking at ninth place. Conversely, Mazda experienced a decline in reliability, especially due to issues with its CX-90 and CX-70 SUVs. Domestic brands also saw shifts, with Lincoln jumping 17 positions to become the highest-ranked domestic brand overall and Buick leading in domestic reliability. Rivian displayed a unique profile, earning the lowest reliability scores but achieving the highest owner satisfaction, attributed to customers’ acceptance of new electric vehicle technologies. The report highlighted ongoing reliability challenges among electric vehicles, particularly with GM's Ultium battery platform, although overall EV reliability shows signs of stabilization amid a growing market. In used vehicle reliability, Lexus topped the list, followed by Toyota, Mazda, Honda, and Acura, with Lincoln once again leading domestic brands. These insights provide valuable data for insurers and industry stakeholders monitoring vehicle performance trends and associated risk factors affecting underwriting and claims strategies.
