SCAN Group Highlights Systemic Issues in Medicare Advantage Insurance

The Medicare Advantage organization SCAN Group has launched a public information campaign aimed at highlighting issues in the U.S. health insurance market. This initiative focuses on educating consumers and healthcare stakeholders about the systemic challenges patients face with insurance coverage, including access barriers and unexpected costs.

SCAN Group, a nonprofit serving over 310,000 members across six states, operates not only a Medicare Advantage plan but also various medical groups and community services. Their campaign, titled "Health Insurance is Broken," utilizes multiple media platforms and is timed to coincide with the Medicare open enrollment period. It addresses critical concerns such as limited coverage, authorization delays, and high out-of-pocket expenses that lead nearly 42% of Americans to delay or avoid care.

Through candid messaging, SCAN aims to reveal the harsh realities many encounter within the insurance system, contrasting with common industry marketing narratives. This campaign underscores ongoing challenges in provider-payer dynamics, regulatory frameworks, and insurance benefit design affecting patient care access and affordability in the Medicare Advantage space.
