Virginia Beach School Employees Sue Over 110% Health Insurance Premium Increase

Approximately 100 Virginia Beach school employees have initiated legal action against Virginia Beach City Public Schools over a significant increase in health insurance premiums, with hikes up to 110%. The lawsuit contends that the school district failed to disclose these premium increases prior to the employees enrolling for the upcoming school year, impacting various staff members including bus drivers, teachers, and cafeteria workers. Starting January 1, 2026, employee premiums will rise between $2.04 and $210.97 per pay period depending on chosen plans, while retirees will face monthly increases from $52.28 to $445.25. The school district explained that the delay in announcing the increase related to efforts to monitor healthcare cost trends before adjusting premiums, an issue acknowledged in recent school board discussions. The Virginia Beach School Board is scheduled to address the premium surge in an upcoming meeting, reflecting ongoing concerns about rising healthcare expenses in educational institutions. This situation underscores the challenges public school systems face in managing escalating health insurance costs amidst budget constraints and regulatory compliance.
