2027 U.S. Leave Management Report by NFP: Trends and Insights
NFP, a subsidiary of Aon and a leading broker in property and casualty as well as benefits consulting, has unveiled its 2027 U.S. Leave Management Report, highlighting the evolving landscape of employer leave benefits in response to shifting workforce demographics.
The report reveals a significant trend among employers broadening their leave strategies to better accommodate the complex life situations of their employees. This shift aims to improve employee experience in light of increased caregiving duties and evolving expectations. Currently, around 76% of employers provide caregiving leave, marking a rise from 71% the previous year. These developments underscore a broader effort to attract and retain valuable talent, according to Maria Trapenasso, NFP’s national practice leader for Talent Solutions.
Challenges in Leave Administration
While employers are expanding leave options, effective implementation remains a hurdle. The regulatory complexities of leave management present a formidable challenge, with only 26% of employers confident in their ability to administer leave accurately and in compliance with standards. This is compounded by a disconnect between employer and employee perceptions: 63% of employers view their leave benefits as generous, yet only 48% believe their employees would agree.
| Employer Offering | Percentage |
|---|---|
| Caregiving Leave | 76% |
| Confidence in Administration | 26% |
| Generous Benefits Perception | 63% (Employers), 48% (Employees) |
Emerging Issues in Workforce Demands
One key area the report highlights is the growing recognition of menopause as a workforce issue. Despite increasing state mandates for workplace accommodations, 54% of employers remain unaware of pertinent legislation. While few firms currently offer specific menopause accommodations, interest is on the rise, increasing to 34% from 25% the previous year. This indicates a burgeoning focus on holistic employee wellbeing strategies.
"Increasing awareness about menopause can enhance workforce engagement and productivity," Trapenasso noted. "Employers attuned to evolving expectations and regulations will be better prepared to support their employees."

Technological Solutions on the Horizon
Operational hurdles in leave management persist, particularly for organizations that lack dedicated software solutions, with 46% of employers spending three to five hours per leave request on administrative tasks. However, there's a growing interest in leveraging technology to streamline processes. At present, 32% of employers offer centralized support hubs, while another 50% are considering their implementation. These innovations point towards a future where leave management integrates seamlessly with wellbeing and workforce support, enhancing overall employee engagement and resilience.
