Understanding Whole Life Insurance: Benefits, Flexibility, and Considerations

Whole life insurance offers long-term coverage and financial benefits, setting it apart from term life options.

Kiruba Eswaran, CEO of Eleos Life, recently highlighted the distinctive features of whole life insurance during an appearance on We Are Austin. Unlike term life insurance, which provides coverage for a set period, whole life insurance offers lifelong protection and builds cash value over time. This accrued cash value can become a financial resource for policyholders, allowing loans against it or potential withdrawal upon policy surrender. However, Eswaran cautioned that accessing the cash value too early might incur tax liabilities and additional charges.

Practical Benefits and Considerations

Whole life insurance also serves different needs compared to funeral home policies. While funeral home plans cater solely to specific funeral costs, whole life insurance provides beneficiaries with greater flexibility in using the proceeds. Eswaran stressed the importance of understanding the portability of pre-need plans if relocation occurs or a funeral home goes out of business. Furthermore, policy management generally accommodates policyholders with payment grace periods, typically around 30 days, thereby avoiding sudden cancellations. For those facing payment difficulties, using the accumulated cash value to sustain reduced coverage can be a viable option.

Balancing Coverage Needs

Whole and term life insurance products meet diverse financial needs. While term life insurance is effective for temporary obligations like mortgage coverage, whole life insurance offers solutions for more enduring requirements, such as covering funeral expenses or providing inheritance. According to Eswaran, an optimal approach for many individuals involves a blend of both insurance types. By aligning extensive term life coverage with a smaller whole life policy, policyholders can ensure comprehensive and lasting financial security.
