Ascot Group Restructures for Growth in Consumer Insurance

Ascot Group Limited is reshaping its global insurance strategy by launching two primary business divisions and appointing three new leaders to foster growth in consumer insurance and enhance coordination across its specialty underwriting divisions.

Beginning October 1, Mark "Sarge" Pepper will take on the role of President of Global Underwriting, with Elizabeth Johnson becoming President of Specialty Insurance and Reinsurance. Ascot also welcomes Christopher Flatt, who will join in early November as President of Consumer Solutions, signaling a strategic expansion into high-net-worth personal lines and consumer-centric products. This reorganization divides Ascot's focus into Specialty Insurance and Reinsurance, and Consumer Solutions, extending Pepper's responsibilities across the U.S., U.K., and Bermuda operations.

Historic Shift in Ascot’s Focus

Historically, Ascot has concentrated on specialty property and casualty insurance and reinsurance, supported by its $16 billion in total assets as of March 31, 2026. The company's interconnected underwriting platforms span the United States, Bermuda, and London. With these changes, Ascot aims to leverage its longstanding expertise in specialty insurance while exploring the burgeoning consumer market.

Pepper, a founding executive at Ascot since 2001, has served as Group Chief Underwriting Officer since 2009. In his new role, he will collaborate with Group CEO Jonathan Zaffino and segment CEOs to develop growth strategies and enhance coordination across geographic units. His expanded responsibilities include product development and talent management in underwriting.

Key Leadership Dynamics

Elizabeth Johnson will oversee the integrated Specialty Insurance and Reinsurance division, streamlining all global underwriting operations under a cohesive leadership structure. This strategic alignment intends to improve synergy between underwriting and distribution. Johnson joined Ascot in 2020 as Chief Underwriting Officer for North America, later advancing to Chief Operating Officer. She brings experience from her roles at Nationwide and AIG, where she managed Excess Casualty globally.

Meanwhile, the newly formed Consumer Solutions division, led by Flatt, signals Ascot's foray into consumer insurance. This includes a focus on high-net-worth personal lines, demanding distinct distribution channels and customer engagement strategies. Flatt's entry into Ascot’s Global Executive Committee underscores the company's commitment to expanding its footprint in consumer markets, drawing from his extensive experience at AIG and roles at Marsh McLennan, GE Capital, and ITT Hartford.

Strategic Implications for Ascot

This restructuring highlights Ascot's intention to balance its specialty focus with new growth avenues aligned with evolving consumer needs. The separation of Consumer Solutions from specialty segments allows for targeted operational frameworks and distribution methodologies suited to personal insurance needs, while retaining focus on complex commercial risks.
