George Washington University Appoints New General Counsel

George Washington University (GW) has appointed Traevena Byrd as its new general counsel amidst evolving legal challenges, with her tenure beginning on August 4, 2023.

Based on her previous experience at American University, Byrd has outlined strategic objectives for the Office of the General Counsel (OGC). Her plans focus on immersing herself in GW’s community, managing forthcoming legal challenges, and defining the future pathway for the OGC. Byrd intends to enhance legal education for staff, emphasizing the importance of problem-solving, unity, and forward-thinking sustainability. This focus is particularly timely as Byrd addresses litigation issues, including student lawsuits concerning antisemitism and accusations of institutional retaliation, along with federal investigations linked to prior administration policies.

Strategic Objectives for GW

Byrd's approach involves supporting decisions throughout varying university processes, aligning her vision with institutional-level administrative decisions. This includes handling hiring and firing processes while addressing legal risks and empowering staff decision-making. Furthermore, in response to concerns raised by Staff Council President Mindy Galván about the need for leadership development and performance review training, Byrd noted the importance of comprehensive managerial training beyond legal aspects.

Impending Changes and Broader Implications

In conjunction with Byrd's role, GW's Vice President and Chief People Officer Sabrina Minor announced the open enrollment period for health plan alterations, starting October 2. Significant changes are expected in January 2027, including transitioning from Lincoln Financial to MetLife for insurance services, coupled with a 9.5% employee contribution increase across medical plans. Additionally, advancements in AI literacy training aim to integrate AI tools effectively within staff responsibilities, featuring comparisons between a GW-specific AI initiative and the Grow with Google program.
