Bamboo Insurance Services Eliminates Risk Retention in Reinsurance Strategy

Bamboo Insurance Services has announced its decision to completely eliminate risk retention participation by its captive reinsurer, Ide8 Re, in its primary insurance program.

According to a recent filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, this strategic move coincides with an ongoing transfer of Ide8 Re’s domicile from Arizona to Bermuda. Initially, the captive reinsurer reduced its risk retention from 12.5% to 2.5% on April 1, 2025. However, as of April 1, 2026, Bamboo has further decreased this participation to zero. Despite these changes, the insurance provider remains committed to leveraging Ide8 Re to align with its capacity providers and explore new market growth opportunities.

Strategic Implications for Bamboo Insurance

Ide8 Re was established as a quota share reinsurance entity under the governance of the Arizona Department of Insurance and Financial Institutions in late 2024. By April 2026, the captive boasted a statutory surplus of $31 million and maintained a mere $2 million maximum loss exposure per catastrophe event. With strategies aimed at mitigating catastrophic losses through self-funded protection, Ide8 Re ensures contract equivalency by participating in programs under the same terms as third-party quota share reinsurers.

Bamboo strategically backs its programs with proprietary platforms like Greenshoots Re and the innovative Greengrove Re catastrophe bond, supported by third-party investments of $400 million and $100 million respectively. Greengrove Re, a brush-specific catastrophe bond, underscores Bamboo's pioneering approach in the catastrophe bond market.

Future Outlook and Market Positioning

With support from seven program partners, 60 global reinsurers, and 28 institutional investors by June 2026, Bamboo's comprehensive approach has fortified its market positioning. The company is actively pursuing a listing of its Class A common stock on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol BMB. Primarily owned by CVC Capital Partners with minority interest from White Mountains Insurance Group, this pivotal move signifies Bamboo's continued evolution within the insurance landscape. The completion of Ide8 Re's domicile transfer to Bermuda is expected in due course, albeit without major operational impact, as highlighted in the August 28 SEC filing.
