PICC Group Faces Growth Challenges in Life and Health Insurance Sectors

PICC Group is facing a dual challenge of modest growth in its life and health insurance sectors and potential risks due to increased catastrophe claims, according to a recent Morningstar report.

While the company's property and casualty sector demonstrated improved underwriting results in the first half of 2026, the life and health divisions lagged behind competitors. The new business value in life insurance rose by a mere 5%, and health insurance increased by only 1%, sharply contrasting with the 11% to 34% growth seen by rival insurers. This lagging performance is primarily attributed to PICC's reliance on bancassurance under tightening fee regulations and a sluggish shift towards participating policies. Additionally, premiums from long-duration policies dropped significantly by 25%, posing further challenges for growth.

PICC's non-life operations also face hurdles with exposure to potential increases in catastrophe claims. The company managed to enhance its combined ratio in the motor insurance sector by 0.7 percentage points to 93.5% and reduced the non-motor sector's ratio by 1.1 percentage points to 94.6%, thanks to fewer catastrophe losses and favorable weather conditions. However, Morningstar warns that the improvement may be short-lived if catastrophe claims rise again. Looking ahead, the non-motor combined ratio is expected to stabilize between 99% and 100% from 2026 to 2028, considering a possible normalization of catastrophe losses and ongoing pricing pressures in government-related business sectors. A gradual optimist projection forecasts reaching a ratio of 98% by 2030.

The insurance industry professionals must keep a vigilant eye on how PICC adapts to these complex challenges. A significant factor will be how the company navigates regulatory constraints in bancassurance while enhancing its catastrophe risk management strategies. As market dynamics evolve, PICC's ability to innovate and remain competitive amid pressing compliance requirements and market pressures will determine its trajectory in the coming years.
