U.S. Auto Insurance Shopping Trends Q2 2026

U.S. auto insurance shopping growth slowed to 1.4% in Q2 2026, down from 3.2% in Q1, according to the LexisNexis Risk Solutions Insurance Demand Meter, with the market remaining stable despite this deceleration.

The latest data indicates a marginal decline in new policy growth from 3.6% to 3.3%. Shopping activity, however, persists robustly, with 47.2% of auto insurance policies being shopped at least once annually, a stability that has been consistent since 2020. Rate adjustments made in the quarter were fairly balanced, with 38% of the rates increasing, 36% decreasing, and 27% staying neutral. Interestingly, these rate adjustments often trigger shopping behavior, especially when they involve increases.

Agent Channel Dynamics

The distribution landscape is witnessing notable shifts. The exclusive agent distribution channel has surged, recording a 6.8% growth. This marks the third consecutive quarterly increase and surpasses both direct and independent agent channels. Previously dominant, direct channels experienced growth declines, while independent agent channels continued to contract at a slower negative rate of 6.4%. This trend signals a potential revival of agent-driven models, providing insurers with an opportunity to leverage these relationships to maintain customer loyalty.

In this new market cycle, insurers are still pursuing growth but with greater discipline and clearer guardrails.

Senior Shopping Trends and Insights

Senior policyholders, age 66 and older, continue to lead in shopping growth, although their rate tapered from 7.1% to 4.1% this quarter. Their significance in the market has grown, with their share among total shoppers increasing to 16.7% from 14.6% in 2020. LexisNexis' report brought to light a revealing factor: seniors with active MLS home listings show a higher attrition rate, suggesting relocations might prompt broader insurance reassessment. This provides insurers with a strategic signal to tailor retention efforts and maintain loyalty within this critical segment.

Key Factors Impacting Auto Insurance Shopping

  • 47.2% of auto policies shopped annually, reflecting stable activity levels.
  • Seniors aged 66+ lead shopping growth with a 16.7% share of total shoppers.
  • Exclusive agents saw a 6.8% growth, leading other channels.
  • MLS home listings indicated a higher policyholder attrition rate of 23.2%.

Navigating the Competitive Landscape

These dynamics emphasize resilience and adaptation in the auto insurance market. The trend towards increased shopping activity, especially among valuable senior policyholders, presents both challenges and opportunities for insurers. By capitalizing on agent-driven models and paying attention to life-event indicators like MLS listings, carriers can preempt policyholder decisions to switch insurers, offering them a competitive advantage in retaining customers during crucial insurance reassessments.
