Radian Group Announces Leadership Transition and Strategic Expansion

Radian Group Inc. has announced a major leadership transition with the appointment of Mike Weinbach as its new chief executive officer and his election to the Board of Directors.

This development follows the earlier announcement in May, signifying Radian's commitment to advancing its specialty insurance operations amid strategic diversification. The leadership change comes as the company seeks to strengthen its position in the global insurance market by marrying its traditional mortgage insurance services with burgeoning specialty insurance lines. The stepping down of Rick Thornberry, who has been at the helm for nearly a decade, will ensure a smooth transition as he remains a strategic advisor until his retirement in 2026.

Strategic Realignment and Expansion

Radian's strategic pivot has been underscored by its recent acquisition of Inigo Limited, a Lloyd’s specialty insurer, enhancing its capabilities beyond the mortgage sector. This acquisition is pivotal to Radian's growth, introducing new areas of specialty insurance and expanding the company's risk management portfolio. Additionally, the divestiture of non-core business units reinforces Radian's focus on becoming a more diversified global insurer.

Leadership with Proven Expertise

Weinbach brings a wealth of experience from leadership roles in mortgage finance and banking industries, notably as president of Mr. Cooper Group, where he played a critical role in the company’s acquisition by Rocket Companies in 2025. His tenure in significant roles at Wells Fargo and JPMorgan Chase also contributes to his robust understanding of financial services and strategic growth.

"Weinbach's extensive experience and strategic insight are invaluable assets as we navigate and grow our specialty insurance operations," said Howard Culang, non-executive chair of Radian's Board.

As Weinbach steps into his new role, he is poised to build on the strong foundation laid by Thornberry, with a vision to enhance service portfolios and customer engagement through technological innovation. His leadership comes at a crucial juncture as Radian embarks on a transformative journey aiming to create substantial value for its customers and shareholders.
