Auto Insurance Premiums Rise: Industry Rankings and AI Challenges
Most of the leading writers in the U.S. property and casualty auto physical damage insurance sector maintained their rankings in 2025, with minimal shifts in position, according to Best's Rankings by Best's News. However, one company experienced a significant decline in premiums. During this period, overall direct premiums written (DPW) in the auto physical damage category rose by 1.3%, reaching $177.40 billion.
Additional insights reveal a 1.6% increase in DPW among the top 100 insurance writers, totaling $172.07 billion. The top 25 writers reported a 1.4% rise, achieving $149.50 billion in DPW. Progressive Corp. maintained its status as the largest private-passenger auto insurance provider in the first quarter, as stated by Tricia Griffith, President and CEO.
During an earnings call, Allstate Corp.'s CEO, Tom Wilson, raised concerns about the implications of advanced language models in artificial intelligence. He emphasized the risk management challenges posed by AI-driven technologies potentially operating beyond their intended constraints. "I think that's an issue that the country really needs to deal with," Wilson asserted.
