Swiss Re's Q2 2026 Earnings Report Highlights Growth in Reinsurance
Swiss Re has announced a net income of $2.8 billion in the first half of 2026, marking a 9% increase compared to the same period in 2025. The second quarter alone contributed $1.3 billion to these earnings. Notably, all three units—Property & Casualty Reinsurance (P&C Re), Corporate Solutions, and Life & Health Reinsurance (L&H Re)—showed improved performance. Additionally, Swiss Re facilitated over $17 billion in claims payments for its clients during this period.
The insurance service result climbed to $3.5 billion this year from $3.0 billion in 2025, despite a slight drop in overall insurance revenue to $20.3 billion from $20.9 billion. Revenue from P&C Re declined, though was partially compensated by increased revenue in L&H Re, aided by favorable foreign exchange conditions, which is a key factor in international risk management portfolios.
In terms of investment, Swiss Re's return improved to 4.0%, with a recurring income yield rising to 4.2% from 4.1%. The company's Swiss Solvency Test ratio remains robust at 264% as of July 1, 2026, surpassing its target range, thus enhancing its regulatory compliance stance.
P&C Reinsurance Performance
P&C Re's net income rose by 18% to $1.4 billion, achieving a combined ratio of 76.7%, better than the previous year's 81.1%. Large natural catastrophe claims, such as those from Storm Kristin in Portugal, amounted to $169 million, while significant man-made losses were $129 million. The unit renewed $4.5 billion in treaty contract premiums during the June and July 2026 cycle, maintaining stable conditions despite a slight 1.2% nominal price decrease. Annually, $19.5 billion in treaty contracts were renewed, reflecting a 0.5% increase in volume.
Corporate Solutions and L&H Reinsurance Highlights
Corporate Solutions experienced a 14% growth in net income to $490 million, with its combined ratio improving to 86.1%. The favorable development of prior-year claims and reduced natural catastrophe incidents contributed significantly to these results. The unit also secured exclusive partnerships in India and Mexico to assist businesses with international expansion.
The L&H Re division reported a 21% rise in net income to $1.0 billion. The insurance service result increased by 24% to $1.2 billion, largely driven by positive experience variances in U.S. mortality and gains in the longevity business. Revenue in this unit grew by 6%, reaching $8.4 billion.
Looking forward, Swiss Re has revised its cost reduction target to $500 million by 2028, up from $300 million, given its progress and additional optimization opportunities in non-client-facing areas. On the leadership front, changes are set for October 1, 2026, as Velina Peneva will become CEO of L&H Re, and Martin Zingg will take the role of Group Chief Investment Officer, joining the Group Executive Committee.
