Surge in Life Insurance Applications: Mid-2026 Update
As of mid-2026, the U.S. life insurance application sector has experienced a remarkable surge, reporting a 15.4% increase in year-to-date (YTD) activity. This unprecedented growth surpassed mid-year levels by 18% compared to 2024 and 18.5% over 2023. In June, year-over-year (YOY) growth achieved a record 20.9%, while Q2 2026 noted a 16.6% increase over Q2 2025, despite a seasonal dip of 8.7% from Q1 2026.
Age Trends in Application Growth
During the first half of 2026, life insurance applications grew significantly with age. Individuals aged 30 and above experienced double-digit YOY growth, with notable increases in the 50+ age group. While ages 0-39 showed declines in January and May, they rebounded in other months. Notably, June 2026 recorded YOY increases across all age groups, and Q2 2026 compared to Q2 2025 saw growth in every age band, with ages 40 and above showing double-digit increases.
Increases in Policy Face Amounts
MIB data indicates that June 2026 YOY growth occurred across all face amounts, with double-digit improvements for policies under $250K to over $1M. Similarly, Q2 2026 demonstrated widespread growth, especially in policies from below $250K to nearly $5M. Comparing YTD with 2025 highlights substantial growth in coverage amounts, particularly notable for policies ranging from $1 to nearly $5M.
Growth in Product Types and Demographics
All insurance product segments demonstrated growth between Q2 2026 and Q2 2025. Term Life and Whole Life policies reported double-digit increases, with Term Life applications rising by 28.2%, Universal Life by 8.1%, and Whole Life by 22.8%. This growth spanned various age groups, with Term Life expanding significantly for ages 0-69 and Whole Life gaining traction for ages 30 and above.
Gender analysis of application activity revealed males accounted for 48.5% of applications through June 2026, while females comprised 45.8%. If these trends continue, males will maintain a higher percentage, continuing the pattern from previous years. While female application activity prevailed in the 60+ age group, males led in younger categories.
The YTD growth by gender showed a 19.1% hike in male applications compared to 15.4% for females. Although both genders experienced increases in older age brackets, male activity outpaced females in all except the 70+ category, where female growth was more pronounced. Across policy face amounts, both genders saw double-digit growth, with notable increases in coverage from $1 to $2.5M.
