Recognizing Future Leaders in Underwriting and Challenges in Auto Pricing

Risk & Insurance® has introduced the Emerging Underwriters recognition program to highlight promising future leaders in underwriting within the property/casualty, specialty, and reinsurance markets. This initiative targets professionals under 30 years old as of February 19, 2027, boasting at least two years of experience. These underwriters are recognized for driving innovation, enhancing profitability, and fostering robust broker relationships via data-driven and customer-focused strategies.

The program's selection process, managed by Risk & Insurance® editors, evaluates the accomplishments and contributions of applicants to the underwriting profession. Entries can be submitted by anyone, including the underwriters themselves, peers, and industry stakeholders. The program emphasizes concise and factual submissions to enable editors to assess applicants effectively.

Editors will assess submissions based on the applicants' professional journeys and their impact on underwriting's future. Winners will be featured in the May/June 2027 issue of Risk & Insurance® and celebrated across multiple digital platforms, earning recognition for their achievements.

Challenges in Auto Insurance Pricing

In the auto insurance sector, discussions around fairness in pricing remain a prominent topic, especially regarding premium differentials based on demographic factors. Leveraging advanced analytics, such as machine learning, provides more accurate risk pricing but raises concerns over unintended biases. Insurers continue to face scrutiny from legislators and advocates about the potential disparate impacts.

Gary Wang, Senior Consulting Actuary at Pinnacle Actuarial Resources, underscores the challenges of ensuring equitable pricing, noting demographic variations. Legislative efforts to address these practices are underway, with states like Colorado advancing measures through Senate Bill 21-169 to mandate fair pricing assessments and compliance governance.

New York has issued directives to guide insurers towards equitable practices, while regions like Washington, D.C., and Washington state are conducting studies to refine their approaches. This regulatory effort highlights the need for precision in risk pricing while mitigating potential disparities in premiums.

Actuaries are collaborating with regulators and insurers to define effective testing methodologies and elucidate the implications of sophisticated data usage. Through ongoing studies and dialogue, entities like Pinnacle aim to ensure that regulatory measures align with fairness objectives, navigating the complexities of fair and efficient pricing strategies.
