New Oklahoma Grants Help Homeowners Mitigate Storm Damage
In Oklahoma, homeowners have a new opportunity to enhance their homes' resistance to severe weather through the Oklahoma Insurance Department’s Strengthen Oklahoma Homes (SOH) Grant Program. Starting Monday, July 13, 2026, at noon CT, eligible homeowners can apply for grants of up to $10,000. These funds support upgrades to the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) FORTIFIED Roof™ – High Wind and Hail standard. This standard not only helps homes withstand challenging weather conditions but can also lead to insurance premium discounts.
Since the program's launch, it has aided over 400 homeowners in achieving the IBHS FORTIFIED Roof™ designation, with an investment exceeding $4 million to strengthen residential mitigation efforts. By reducing damage from storms, the initiative also aims to minimize potential future losses for homeowners. Eligible applicants can access up to $10,000 to meet construction standards that go beyond typical building codes, bolstering the home’s resilience against extreme weather.
Applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis, encouraging homeowners to prepare early. To qualify, applicants must have a homestead exemption filed with their county assessor. The Oklahoma Insurance Department emphasizes that proactive mitigation is one of the most effective strategies to reduce storm damage and manage long-term insurance costs.
