Hong Kong Life Insurance Market Growth Projections

Hong Kong's insurance sector is heavily dominated by life insurance, which is projected to make up 93.2% of the market by 2025. According to Allianz Research's Global Insurance Report 2026, the region's total insurance premiums are expected to reach approximately $95.8 billion (EUR82.6 billion) in 2025. Life insurance alone is forecasted to account for $89.3 billion (EUR77.0 billion), significantly surpassing property and casualty insurance at $3.8 billion (EUR3.3 billion) and health insurance at $2.7 billion (EUR2.3 billion).

The report also indicates that Hong Kong boasts the highest insurance penetration among selected Asian markets, with total premiums constituting 22.6% of the GDP by 2025. Notably, life insurance alone contributes 21.1% to GDP, while property and casualty and health insurance account for 0.9% and 0.6%, respectively. The market shows impressive insurance density, with per capita spending estimated to be $12,942 (EUR11,157) in 2025, primarily from life insurance at $12,077 (EUR10,411). In comparison, per capita spending for property and casualty and health insurance is expected to be $512 (EUR441) and $354 (EUR305), respectively.

Looking forward, the report envisions continued growth in Hong Kong's insurance market into the next decade, albeit at a slower pace than some developing Asian regions. Allianz Research projects life insurance premiums to climb from $89.3 billion (EUR77.0 billion) in 2025 to $156.7 billion (EUR135.1 billion) by 2036. Likewise, the property and casualty segment is anticipated to rise to $5.9 billion (EUR5.1 billion), with health insurance premiums potentially reaching $4.9 billion (EUR4.2 billion). Annual growth rates from 2026 to 2036 are projected at 5.2% for life insurance, 4.1% for property and casualty, and 5.9% for health insurance, reflecting a tempered growth trend compared to previous years.
