The Hartford Q1 2025 Earnings Reflect Catastrophe Loss Impact Amid Premium Growth

The Hartford reported a first quarter 2025 net income of $625 million, a 16% decrease from the previous year, impacted by $467 million in catastrophe losses, including $325 million related to the January California wildfire. Core earnings fell 10% year-over-year to $639 million.

Despite these losses, the company's property and casualty segment showed a 9% growth in written premiums, driven by a 10% rise in business insurance and an 8% increase in personal insurance premiums. The business insurance combined ratios remained stable, while the personal insurance segment saw an improvement in the underlying combined ratio by 6.4 points.
