Illinois Unclaimed Property Program Returns Billions to Residents
Since 2015, the Illinois State Treasurer's Office, led by Michael Frerichs, has returned over $2.5 billion in unclaimed property to residents, businesses, and nonprofits statewide. This impressive milestone was achieved through the I-Cash program, which has supported over 2.5 million claimants by implementing advancements such as electronic claims processing and integrating state databases to streamline asset returns without formal claims.
Frerichs emphasized these innovations, noting his office's commitment to managing the state's unclaimed property efficiently for Illinois residents' benefit. A significant contribution to the $2.5 billion surpassing was a transaction of $440,000 directed from the estates of Joseph and Emilia Maldonado to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, honoring their charitable intentions.
Addressing unclaimed life insurance benefits has been a priority during Frerichs' tenure. Audits uncovered over $550 million in unpaid death benefits across Illinois, prompting legislative reform through the Unclaimed Life Insurance Benefits Act. This initiative has resulted in over $500 million being distributed to rightful beneficiaries, highlighting life insurance's vital role in supporting families rather than merely boosting insurers' profits.
Frerichs stressed the importance of transparency in the insurance industry to ensure policyholders' intentions are honored. He urged residents to regularly check the I-Cash website for potential unclaimed assets, reinforcing the need for vigilance in locating unreported insurance claims and property.
