Enhancing Communication Between Automotive Repair Shops and Insurers
Todd Ahrens, a territory sales manager for Sherwin-Williams Automotive Performance Coatings, brings a wealth of experience from both the insurance and collision repair sectors. His diverse career journey highlights the critical need for effective communication between automotive body shops and insurance carriers.
Ahrens entered the auto repair industry in the 1980s in Wisconsin, inspired by automotive magazines showcasing vehicle transformations. After high school, he developed his skills at a local Maaco shop, eventually advancing to an estimator role at a Chevrolet dealership's collision center. His expertise expanded further at a European collision center focusing on premium car brands, where under the mentorship of General Manager Fred G., Ahrens played a key role in the facility's growth, later becoming a general manager at the age of 31.
The most significant change in Ahrens' career was his transition to a national insurance company, where he rose from estimator to Direct Repair Program (DRP) manager. This move gave him valuable insights into training and catastrophe management, with his involvement in events like the 2011 Joplin tornado being especially pivotal.
Enhancing Communication and Reducing Industry Tensions
Ahrens stresses that the key to reducing tension between repair shops and insurers lies in enhanced communication. He advocates for fostering positive relationships, advising insurers to avoid approaching shops with hostility. He also urges repair shops to recognize their reliance on insurance carriers. Additionally, he calls for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to clearly define structural and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) requirements, reducing compliance ambiguity.
Reflecting on his extensive career, Ahrens advises newcomers to stay humble and embrace continuous learning, acknowledging the automotive industry's constant evolution. His guiding principle is to "listen first and speak last," a mindset he advocates for sustained professional development.
In his role at Sherwin-Williams, Ahrens leverages his comprehensive background as the industry navigates advancements like ADAS systems and the rise of electric vehicles (EVs). He remains motivated by the dynamic progression of the industry. Outside work, Ahrens maintains a personal collection of vehicles, illustrating his enduring passion for cars.
Ahrens encapsulates his perspective with a universal mission: to pursue constant learning and improvement within the automotive industry.
