Home Insurance Premiums in Bonner County: Rising Challenges

Property owners in Bonner County are being alerted to possible increases in home insurance premiums due to changes in the fire district's rating. These anticipated hikes arise from periodic assessments that assign Public Protection Classification scores, which evaluate a community's fire suppression capabilities by examining resources like equipment and personnel.

The fire chief of Selkirk Fire Rescue and EMS highlighted potential shifts in the Westside Fire District's rating—from a current score of 4 to a maximum of 10. Insurance providers leverage these scores to set premiums, with lower scores typically leading to more favorable rates. Ryan Scaggs, owner of Cornerstone Insurance NW, stated that this situation presents significant challenges for homeowners, who are finding it increasingly difficult to secure insurance or are encountering prohibitive costs.

Scaggs noted cases where clients faced premium increases surpassing 100%, while some have lost insurance coverage entirely. He pointed to last year's unsuccessful levy proposals in Bonner County, which aimed to enhance fire district funding, as contributing factors to this insurance dilemma. Scaggs remarked that the premium surges far outpace any potential tax increases that successful levy proposals might have entailed, emphasizing the broader financial impacts for residents.

He advised homeowners dealing with coverage issues or steep rate increases to consider alternatives. Suggested actions include switching carriers if needed, consulting regional insurers such as Farm Bureau or Gem State Insurance, and seeking independent agents with local expertise. If these options fall short, excess and surplus line carriers may provide additional solutions through independent agents.
