In Long Beach, California, SCAN Group has introduced a groundbreaking role to amplify its commitment to integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into operations. Aman Bhandari, Ph.D., has been appointed as the company's first Chief AI Officer. This strategic move aims to advance SCAN Health Plan's AI initiatives, positioning it among the top ten Medicare Advantage health plans in the nation.
Dr. Bhandari will oversee SCAN's AI and advanced analytics strategy, with a focus on expanding AI applications in both operational processes and care delivery systems. Dr. Sachin H. Jain, CEO of SCAN Group and SCAN Health Plan, noted that while the healthcare sector is early in AI adoption, SCAN strives to use AI beyond traditional areas like risk adjustment to augment daily operations and member services.
The organization is committed to empowering employees with AI tools that enhance workflow and decision-making processes. This involves training staff to develop AI solutions for improved service delivery and clinical operations, such as medical chart summarization and enhanced Interactive Voice Response (IVR) systems for member services.
Unlike many corporations that confine AI innovation to technology departments, SCAN integrates its AI function within the People and Transformation team. This demonstrates its approach of aligning AI with workforce training and adoption strategies, emphasizing the importance of embedding AI within organizational culture alongside technological advancements.
Lindsay Crawley Herbert, Chief People and Transformation Officer at SCAN, emphasized that true AI transformation lies in harmonizing technological complexity with workforce adoption and ethics. This strategic integration places employees at the forefront of AI adoption, ensuring technology is utilized effectively and responsibly.
Dr. Bhandari's extensive career spans both public and private sectors, where he has spearheaded AI organizations and projects. His experience includes significant roles at Vertex Pharmaceuticals and Merck & Co., where he applied data analytics to various operational sectors. He has also been instrumental in formulating technology policy at The White House and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

SCAN's strategy positions it as a model for responsible AI integration within healthcare organizations, aimed at enhancing service quality and care for its members. This executive appointment aligns with SCAN Group's ongoing efforts to merge healthcare objectives with technological advancements, as the industry considers widespread AI implementation. SCAN continues to prioritize solutions that enhance service delivery and member care.
