Open Enrollment for Employee Benefits Begins April 2
The open enrollment period for employee benefits will commence on April 2, signaling the annual opportunity for employees to adjust their benefits without needing a qualifying life event. The West Virginia University (WVU) Employee Benefits department has outlined several preparatory steps for employees looking to optimize their benefit selections.
Employees are advised to first assess their current benefits by examining the deductions noted on their pay statements, supplemented by consulting the specific benefits chart available. Ensuring correct access credentials for the WVU benefits administration portals is crucial, as most adjustments during open enrollment will be made through these platforms. Health and life insurance changes are completed via the Public Employees Insurance Agency (PEIA) Manage My Benefits portal, whereas amendments to dental, vision, and other coverages are handled through the Mountaineer Flexible Benefits portal. Employees should confirm their login information or register if they are new to these systems.
It is essential for employees to verify that their data is current within the PEIA’s portal, as outdated information regarding themselves or dependents can affect premiums and coverage details. Furthermore, those enrolled in family health plans must be aware of the spousal surcharge. As mandated by West Virginia law, a surcharge applies if an employee’s spouse has opted for PEIA coverage over an alternative employer-provided plan. Changes in a spouse’s coverage should be reported through an updated Spousal Surcharge Affidavit in the portal.
Additionally, employees can qualify for a premium discount related to tobacco use by confirming their tobacco-free status through an affidavit. This status must be reported in the PEIA portal if there is any change, ensuring compliance for policyholders and enrolled dependents.
Regarding the coordination of benefits, UMR—PEIA’s third-party administrator—requires policyholders covering dependents to verify other existing coverage annually. This process can be completed by setting up or accessing an account on UMR’s website or by contacting their support line.
Employees should also take their personal circumstances into account when selecting benefits. Factors such as pending medical procedures or changes in dependent status can influence the choice of benefit plans. Employees are encouraged to evaluate these aspects ahead of open enrollment to align their selections with anticipated needs.
