New York AG Reveals $1.53M Restitution Through Healthcare Helpline

New York Attorney General Letitia James revealed that her office’s healthcare helpline facilitated $1.53 million in restitution and savings in 2025. Designed to aid New Yorkers, this helpline tackles issues such as medical billing, claim processing, and access to care. With advocates intervening in 3,279 specific cases, the helpline addressed a total of 4,890 complaints throughout the year, focusing on billing practices, claim processing errors, and healthcare plan denials.

There was a slight 1% uptick in complaints regarding coverage denials compared to 2024. Issues related to claims processing and payments also experienced a marginal increase. Reports of improper practices, which encompass incorrect refunds and inefficient collections, rose by 5%, making up 13% of total complaints in 2025, highlighting ongoing challenges in regulatory compliance requirements among healthcare providers.

A minor segment of the complaints, 5%, pertained to maintaining health coverage, with 30% resulting from health plan provider errors and 13% stemming from employer mistakes. These issues underscore the need for robust risk management and compliance strategies within the insurance industry to enhance consumer trust and service quality.
