Florida's Legislative Session Highlights Impact on Insurance Proposals

As Florida's 2026 legislative session approaches its conclusion, many proposed bills face discontinuation as committee meetings wrap up. Out of the 1,893 bills introduced, a significant portion won't advance to Governor Ron DeSantis's desk for consideration, highlighting the need for reintroduction in future legislative sessions.

A key proposal relevant to the insurance sector is SB 84/HB 343, which sought to establish the Insurance Solutions Advisory Council. The council was designed to analyze Florida's property and auto insurance markets, providing annual insights and recommendations aimed at reducing insurance premiums for residents. Despite its potential impact, the bill did not progress, struggling to secure a committee hearing.

Other noteworthy legislative efforts included bills on public safety and child protection, such as HB 1427/SB 1586 aimed at modernizing 911 services through regional consolidation. This initiative did not gain momentum, nor did HB 233/SB 1384, which proposed raising the child car seat age requirement. Additionally, HB 281/SB 344 aimed to limit AI-driven initiatives in mental health services, stipulating that human professionals, rather than AI, conduct direct services. This too failed to advance, mirroring the fate of several other proposed regulations this session.
