Health Insurance Plan Approved for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Airport Employees
The Bi-County Airport Board recently approved a health insurance plan for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport's 49 employees, following updates from Highmark Insurance. Set to begin in January, the plan addresses AI-driven prior authorization delays and regulatory compliance requirements. Despite financial uncertainty, Finance Director Chris Dalessandro estimates the cost will rise from $90,000 in 2025 to $97,000 in 2026, reflecting industry fluctuations and risk management challenges.
Although Commissioner Bill Gaughan raised regulatory queries, the board moved forward, passing the resolution with a 5-1 vote. In other decisions, the board approved a salary increase for Acting Executive Director BJ Teichman to $104,000, aligning with industry standards. Financial reports indicated substantial income growth in airport operations, despite ongoing expenses of $892,929.22, which partially funded major construction initiatives.
Operational and Human Resource Developments
Human Resources Director Michelle Aigeldinger reported new appointments pending compliance clearance. Meanwhile, Beth Coslett’s air service development assessment showed a 5.8% decline in November 2025 passenger enplanements, due to weather and air traffic control issues. The board also solidified a three-year, $9,000 annual contract with Air Tera to enhance service offerings in the coming year.
Community Engagement Initiatives
Acting Executive Director Teichman highlighted a community-focused initiative with American Airlines and the Gary Sinise Foundation. The "Snowball Express" event facilitated trips to Disney World for families of fallen military personnel and first responders, showcasing the airport's commitment to community-supportive activities. This initiative not only bolsters community ties but also strengthens the airport’s brand as a socially responsible provider.
