Winter Fire Destroys Wilkes County Home Near Blue Ridge Parkway
A fire destroyed a 4,500-square-foot home near Sheets Gap Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway in northern Wilkes County late Saturday night and early Sunday morning. Responding fire departments from Wilbar, Millers Creek, Glendale Springs, McGrady, Mulberry-Fairplains, Cricket, and Laurel Springs faced challenging winter conditions with temperatures around 25 degrees and icy roads, which complicated firefighting efforts. The home was engulfed in flames upon arrival, and despite a rapid response, the structure was too damaged to save. Property owners Eddie and Sarah Neal were away during much of the day but discovered the fire after returning home at night. The fire likely started as a chimney fire near a wood stove flue, although electrical issues could not be entirely ruled out due to the owner’s profession as an electrical contractor and the presence of electrical problems. The couple and their dog escaped without injury. The fire also damaged a vehicle and recreational equipment near the home. The Neals have homeowners insurance and are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross and relatives. The home was built in 1964 with later additions and located about 500 feet from the Sheets Gap Overlook along Buckwheat Branch Road. The extensive firefighting required large volumes of water, further challenged by freezing temperatures causing water to freeze quickly during suppression efforts. The Wilkes Fire Marshal confirmed that the fire cause was undetermined due to the extent of damage but ruled out foul play. This incident underscores the risks of winter firefighting and the importance of coordinated mutual aid among fire departments in rural areas. Homeowners insurance coverage was activated immediately to provide recovery resources, highlighting its critical role in managing losses from accidental fires. The case also illustrates operational challenges such as access on icy roads and water supply logistics during cold weather, which can impact insurance claims and fire department resource planning in similar rural settings.
