Birmingham VA Health Care System Achieves 5-Star CMS Rating in 2025

The Birmingham VA Health Care System has earned a prestigious 5-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), improving from its previous 3-star ranking. This rating places Birmingham VA among the top medical centers nationwide, highlighting its commitment to delivering high-quality, coordinated healthcare services to Veterans across central and northern Alabama. The rating considers critical factors such as patient safety, readmission and mortality rates, patient experience, and timely, effective care.

In 2025, fewer hospitals nationwide received the five-star designation, with only two medical centers in Alabama achieving this status. The Birmingham VA system includes 11 clinics and its main hospital with over 100 beds, serving more than 71,000 Veterans across 24 counties. This recognition reflects the dedication of staff to enhancing Veterans' healthcare outcomes and aligns with broader trends in high-quality care among Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals.
