Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania Settles for $790K Over Medicare Billing Violations

Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania, PC (ECOP) has agreed to pay $790,000 to resolve allegations under the False Claims Act relating to improper Medicare billing practices. The claims concerned Evaluation & Management (E&M) services submitted to Medicare Part B alongside bilateral eye injections on the same date, which violated Medicare regulations.

This issue spanned from September 2018 through April 2025, indicating a sustained pattern of non-compliant billing. The Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (HHS-OIG) and the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania led the investigation and enforcement efforts. This settlement highlights ongoing regulatory scrutiny and enforcement actions designed to uphold compliance and reduce fraud, waste, and abuse in federal healthcare programs. Maintaining claim integrity is critical as improper billing increases taxpayer-funded program costs, and enforcement activities serve to deter future violations and safeguard Medicare resources.
