Humana Expands Medicaid Managed Care with Virginia Cardinal Care

Humana has been selected as one of five plan administrators for Virginia Cardinal Care, allowing beneficiaries in Virginia to now choose Humana Healthy Horizons as their Medicaid managed care option. This expansion enables Humana to provide comprehensive Medicaid coverage and human-centered care to Virginians under the Cardinal Care program. Humana Healthy Horizons focuses on addressing the holistic health needs of its members, integrating physical, behavioral, pharmacy, long-term care, and social services to enhance overall health outcomes for vulnerable populations in the state.

The company has a longstanding presence in Virginia through Medicare Advantage and TRICARE plans and is further committing an additional $2 million over the next five years to the Virginia Health Care Foundation (VHCF) to support and expand the behavioral health workforce. This follows an initial $500,000 investment aimed at bolstering behavioral health resources in the Commonwealth, reflecting Humana's dedication to improving mental health services alongside physical health care.

Humana Healthy Horizons manages benefits for nearly 1.5 million Medicaid members nationally and has developed expertise in serving diverse populations, including children, parents, and beneficiaries who are aged, blind, or disabled. The plan's integrated approach combines health care with social service interventions to address social determinants that affect member health and well-being. This strategic integration supports Virginia’s Medicaid recipients in achieving better health results and a higher quality of life.

The addition of Humana Healthy Horizons to Virginia Cardinal Care’s Medicaid managed care options is expected to introduce innovative solutions that meet complex patient needs. Given Humana's extensive experience and commitment, the move encourages a more coordinated and comprehensive care delivery model that aligns with state efforts to improve Medicaid services and outcomes.

Humana Inc., through its insurance and health services divisions, emphasizes a person-centered care philosophy aiming to simplify healthcare access and enhance service quality. Its expanded role within Virginia's Medicaid landscape represents a significant development in managed care administration in the state, potentially influencing market competition and beneficiary choice.

Overall, Humana's entry into Virginia Cardinal Care reinforces the insurer's commitment to Medicaid expansion and offers policymakers and stakeholders an additional managed care option that prioritizes comprehensive and integrated care delivery for vulnerable populations in Virginia.
