New York Medicare Fraud Alert Targets Seniors with Expiring Card Scam
State advocates in New York are warning about a Medicare fraud scam targeting seniors. Scammers are contacting older adults, falsely claiming their Medicare cards are expiring and requesting confirmation of Medicare numbers over the phone. This tactic aims to steal personal information to commit fraud, exploiting confusion around Medicare updates and COVID-related features.
Medicare officials emphasize that they do not call beneficiaries to request personal information. To help seniors detect and report such scams, the My Health Care Tracker app has been introduced, which monitors Medicare charges and offers direct reporting to the Senior Medicare Patrol. Authorities urge anyone who suspects they have been targeted to contact Medicare or the New York Senior Medicare Patrol for assistance.
