Malibu Life Enters U.S. Annuity Market with Integrated Approach

Malibu Life, a new player in the U.S. retail annuity market, is making strides with its integrated approach that combines technology, product development, distribution, and customer service.

Located in George Town, Cayman Islands, Malibu Life is entering the U.S. market with its debut products, PillarMark and SpireMark, fixed indexed annuities marketed by Legacy Marketing Group. These products are offered under TruSpire Retirement Insurance Company, a Malibu subsidiary in Irving, Texas. According to Robert Pavleszek, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Malibu Life, the company leverages external expertise to seamlessly connect product, distribution, technology, and operations.

An Integrated Approach to Operations

At ITC Vegas, Pavleszek emphasized that the company's lack of an extensive legacy technology infrastructure is an asset, allowing Malibu to integrate specialized capabilities efficiently. This approach offers a cohesive experience for both producers and policyholders. By treating its operational functions as interconnected, Malibu facilitates a modular strategy that allows for easy incorporation or replacement of new capabilities without a complete system overhaul. This flexibility is critical for providing a smooth experience for all users, from distributors to end customers.

Technological Support and Distribution

In today's market, distributors increasingly value the technological support behind a carrier's offerings. According to Pavleszek, distributors are developing their own technology solutions to enhance processes such as agent recruitment and sales, expecting carriers like Malibu to provide compatible support. Malibu's acquisition of TruSpire further establishes its U.S. origination platform, complementing its reinsurance operations.

  • TruSpire acquisition: Completed in July, provides a direct U.S. origination platform.
  • Service providers: EXL as the third-party administrator, supported by LifePro, LDS, and Hexure's Firelight.
  • Legacy Marketing Group's role: Recruits agents, manages illustrations and suitability reviews, and oversees compensation.

Service Standards and AI Integration

Malibu starts its U.S. journey with clear service benchmarks: issuing 95% of compliant cases within three days and immediate commission payments upon contract issue. Call center responsiveness is another focus, with a target of answering 96% of help desk calls within 30 seconds. Pavleszek sees artificial intelligence as a potential tool to improve these processes, particularly in linking systems and refining actuarial models with experiential data. However, he stresses that AI should target specific business problems for genuine economic benefit.

Building Trust Through Technology and Service

Pavleszek draws from his experience at USAA, where guiding customers through uncertainty was a core value. He insists that technology, while crucial for efficiency, should never overshadow the insurer's primary role as a guide for clients. Malibu aims to build trust with agents, producers, and retirees, not just with its robust product offerings but through committed service and innovative technological solutions.
