HMSA Discontinues Medicare Advantage Plans for 2027
HMSA's decision to discontinue its Medicare Advantage Complete Plus and Standard Plus plans will require approximately 16,000 members to select new plans for 2027, due to federal funding constraints and rising healthcare costs.
The changes, effective after December 31, come as HMSA seeks to comply with CMS regulations by reshaping its plan offerings. Members must select a new plan during the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period from October 15 to December 7. As part of the new pricing, the Complete Plus plan on Oahu will rise to $240 monthly, an increase of about $90. Other plans include the Complete plan at $55 and the Select Plus plan at $45 per month.
Member Concerns and Reassurances
Member anxiety has been palpable, with enrollees like Kathy Arakaki expressing concerns over the continuity of coverage amidst ongoing medical treatments, especially in light of a confusing initial notification. HMSA has acknowledged the initial communication might have been distressing but contends with regulatory restrictions on the timing and content of member notifications. Arakaki, now aware that her coverage can continue at a higher rate, emphasizes the need for clearer communication.
Communication and Assistance
HMSA is actively reaching out through phone calls to all affected members to guide them in making informed decisions. This outreach includes in-person assistance available at its local centers. Without action on members' part, they will default to Original Medicare. To further clarify available options, the company has assured a dedicated effort to support a smooth transition during this critical enrollment period.
