Insure and Save Program: Affordable Insurance for Detroit Homeowners
The Economic Architecture Project, in partnership with the Rocket Community Fund, has launched the groundbreaking Insure and Save program to help Detroit homeowners access affordable insurance options.
Unveiled on September 29, this initiative provides a cost-free service connecting Detroit residents with insurers offering appropriate homeowners policies. Through the program, agents work one-on-one with homeowners, providing education on strategies to reduce premiums and manage deductibles effectively. This comes against a backdrop of stark insurance cost discrepancies in Michigan, where recent research by Poverty Solutions reveals that Detroit's rates are nearly double the state average. This disparity plays into the concerning reality that around 63% of Detroit homeowners are uninsured, a situation exacerbated by the city's older housing stock and fluctuating property values.
Addressing Cost Barriers
The Insure and Save program seeks to bridge the insurance gap for those either underinsured or unsure of their coverage. According to Aditi Advani Ramirez of the Economic Architecture Project, Detroit homeowners face some of the highest insurance costs in the nation. Ramirez clarifies, “We are not selling insurance. We really just want to make sure homeowners are getting the protection they need.”
This initiative's mission is exemplified through Paula Jackson-Sims, an early participant who has owned her home in eastern Detroit for two years. She highlighted the program's role in relieving her financial struggles, allowing her to meet mortgage and insurance payments while maintaining affordability. By working directly with program agents and honestly discussing her financial constraints, Jackson-Sims successfully lowered her insurance costs while keeping the deductible manageable.
Practical Solutions and Next Steps
Enrollment for the Insure and Save program remains open until October 15. Interested individuals can learn more by contacting the project directly. The initiative offers a tailored approach to insurance coverage, aiming to support Detroit homeowners navigating financial pressures with viable insurance solutions.
