Bridge to Medicaid Act Targets Coverage Gap in Alabama and Other Non-Expansion States
U.S. Representatives Terri Sewell and Shomari C. Figures have introduced the Bridge to Medicaid Act, aiming to address the Medicaid coverage gap affecting over 100,000 individuals in Alabama. The legislation proposes temporary premium subsidies for those earning between 100 and 138 percent of the federal poverty level in non-expansion states like Alabama until full Medicaid expansion occurs. From 2026, the Act would provide Affordable Care Act premium subsidies, lower deductibles, and reduced cost-sharing, with continuous enrollment available year-round. Additionally, the Federal Medical Assistance Percentage would increase by 3 percent for existing Medicaid expansion populations in expansion states during 2026-2028 under this policy, intended to enhance access to affordable healthcare for underserved populations.
