Empowering Nonprofits: Storytelling for Advocacy Training in California
The IEHP Foundation has launched the Storytelling for Advocacy & Fundraising Training Cohort, designed to tackle communication challenges faced by regional organizations in California’s Inland Empire.
Launched in early 2026, the program targets 35 leaders from 20 local organizations, aiming to strengthen their storytelling abilities for better advocacy and fundraising efforts. Each organization received a $1,500 grant to implement storytelling projects after completing the training. The cohort was led by Kristen Caloca, CEO of Kairos Impact Strategies, who highlighted the program's focus on ethical, trauma-informed storytelling and creating impactful narratives. According to Caloca, almost every storytelling skill improved by 50 percentage points, enhancing participants' confidence and trust.
Impact of Storytelling on Community Initiatives
The program empowered participants to craft compelling stories about their organizations' regional impact. These stories have successfully spurred donations, recruited volunteers, and influenced policy. For instance, the California Family Life Center showcased the journey of a foster child named Roger, illustrating the transformative power of community initiatives. Similarly, the Symba Center shared the story of Paul, a client who transitioned off the streets with their support, underscoring the individual benefits of supportive services. Furthermore, projects like the El Sol Park & Learning Center emphasized the significance of local collaboration in addressing community challenges.
Immediate Benefits and Long-term Strategies
The training has already brought tangible benefits to participating organizations. Beth Spalding of the Children’s Fund applied new storytelling techniques to successfully increase employee engagement in a giving campaign. Similarly, the Riverside Medical Clinic Charitable Foundation utilized enhanced communication strategies for its Healthcare Scholarship Program, significantly boosting applications and securing additional support. Krystel Joseph, Executive Director of the Riverside Medical Clinic Charitable Foundation, highlighted that storytelling is not just about demonstrating past successes but also a critical tool for encouraging ongoing participation.
