TruckerCloud Launches FleetFile to Revolutionize Commercial Auto Insurance
TruckerCloud has announced regulatory filings for FleetFile, a predictive crash risk score, which seeks to leverage telematics data to enhance commercial auto insurance ratings for heavy trucks.
Known for its innovative approach in the insurance technology landscape, TruckerCloud, based in Atlanta, is moving to incorporate FleetFile into insurance policies as a rating variable. This comes at a critical time for the commercial auto insurance sector, which, according to AM Best, has endured 14 consecutive years of underwriting losses. In 2024 alone, the sector faced a financial deficit of $4.9 billion, culminating in over $10 billion in losses in recent years. Despite regular rate hikes, profitability remains elusive, underlining the urgency for more precise assessments of risk and reward.
Addressing a Complex Challenge with Data
Telematics data is rapidly becoming a cornerstone in reshaping the insurance industry. Available for over half of North America's 34 million fleet vehicles and expected to spread to 85% by 2029, this data holds untapped potential. However, inconsistencies in data formats from multiple providers present a significant challenge for effective cross-account comparisons.
FleetFile aims to standardize this data by integrating inputs from over 200 telematics systems into a uniform crash risk score. More than 70 insurers and managing general agents (MGAs) already benefit from this harmonized system, which streamlines underwriting and risk assessment processes by aligning trip data variables like mileage and timestamps.
FleetFile is engineered to make telematics data actionable for insurers, allowing it to influence policy rates.
Industry Implications and Future Developments
The ability of FleetFile to transform raw data into actionable insights is a potential game changer for commercial auto insurance providers. As Geoff Werner, an advisor on the FleetFile filings, notes, insurers leveraging this platform can expect significant gains in efficiency and profitability. This is particularly salient given the current financial strains on the sector.
Looking forward, TruckerCloud plans to expand the FleetFile approach to lighter-duty commercial vehicles. The company’s focus remains on offering actionable data to inform crucial insurance decisions. Currently, FleetFile is provided at no extra cost to existing TruckerCloud clients until the end of October 2026, offering insurers and MGAs an opportunity to explore this innovative scoring system.
