Customer Satisfaction in Auto and Home Insurance: A Need for Clarity

Research indicates a significant connection between customer satisfaction and how well U.S. auto and home insurance policyholders understand their coverage, yet more than 40% of them remain uninformed.

A recent survey by JD Power over the past three years revealed alarmingly low trust levels among policyholders, pointing to a profound lack of understanding as a core issue. Stephen Crewdson, managing director of insurance business intelligence at JD Power, noted that "That key performance indicator of what the overall satisfaction score will be—the KPI that they understand their policy and what it covers—has been in our auto study all the way back to 2000. And insurers haven’t moved the needle that much." These findings underscore the need for clearer communication and education by insurers to enhance trust and engagement.

The 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study, published in June, illuminates a stark contrast in customer satisfaction scores among over 52,000 surveyed participants. The average satisfaction score stood at 644 on a 1,000-point scale; however, those unfamiliar with their policy details recorded a significantly lower satisfaction score of 568. In sharp contrast, policyholders who understood their coverage registered a remarkably higher score of 695, showcasing a 127-point gap. This statistical insight suggests that improving policy comprehension could significantly bolster customer satisfaction and trust in insurance providers.
