FBI Warns of Nationwide Health Insurance Scams Exploiting Consumers

The FBI has issued a national warning about increasing fraudulent schemes targeting individuals seeking affordable health insurance. These scams often involve unsolicited offers via phone, text, or email for low-cost medical insurance plans that ultimately provide no real coverage, leading to significant financial losses for victims. Scammers impersonate legitimate insurers and use high-pressure tactics to prompt immediate enrollment with false promises of special rates or free services.

Victims typically discover that these sham insurance companies disappear or fail to cover medical expenses when needed, resulting in substantial out-of-pocket costs. The FBI has reported numerous instances of such scams nationwide and recommends vigilance when receiving unsolicited insurance offers.

To protect against these fraudulent schemes, the FBI advises consumers to verify insurance provider credentials before enrollment, disregard high-pressure sales tactics, and report suspected scams to local law enforcement and the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). This notification underscores ongoing risks in the health insurance market related to fraudulent actors exploiting consumers' cost concerns.
