Harnessing Diverse Backgrounds for Real Estate Success
Gjata's path from Albania to Greece during the 1997 war laid a foundation of fortitude, crucial for tackling New York City's demanding renovation projects. Starting her career in hospitality roles in New York equipped her with the necessary insight to appeal to Airbnb guests. Meanwhile, Gale's expertise in the energy sector, particularly in natural gas trading and risk management, provides critical skills for analyzing real estate potential and guiding business strategies.
The duo's synergistic relationship is a cornerstone of their operation. "We both have those qualities needed for each half of it," Gale commented, showcasing their balanced skill sets. Venturing Into Airbnb Property Management
Their real estate venture began in earnest in 2015 when Gjata started subletting rooms through Airbnb to manage rent after her roommates left. This initial foray into rental arbitrage in Hell's Kitchen provided practical experience, enhancing her interest in property management and renovation.
Their first significant project came in 2019 with the Madison Guesthouse in Brooklyn, revealing the complexities of property renovation, as they dealt with major plumbing issues while living onsite. Despite the challenges, the guesthouse launched within just three months. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic added layers of complexity, forcing a temporary relocation to the Finger Lakes.
Navigating New York Real Estate Challenges
In late 2020, the couple invested in a second Brooklyn brownstone, the Macon Guesthouse. Here, the renovation process was extended to nearly two years due to permit negotiations and collaborations with specialized architects, finally opening in 2022. Despite these hurdles, the project proved to be a growth opportunity, deepening their appreciation for architectural history and renovating skills.
Future Prospects and Continuous Growth
Currently, Gjata and Gale are completing their third property, the Halsey Guesthouse, and their ambitions extend beyond Brooklyn. Each renovation not only enhances their business strategy but also intensifies their passion for architectural preservation. While they aspire to set roots in Brooklyn, the pull of new projects is strong; as Gale admits, “It's hard when the next project keeps calling.”
