Louisiana Fire Districts Improve Ratings, Potentially Lowering Insurance Premiums

Homeowners across 18 fire districts in Louisiana may see a reduction in property insurance premiums following improved fire protection ratings, according to the Louisiana Department of Insurance. These enhanced ratings, announced for the first half of 2026, signify significant achievements in community safety.

Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple praised the fire districts for their achievements, emphasizing that better fire protection not only ensures greater safety but can also lead to reduced insurance costs. "Improved fire protection ratings reflect the diligent work of fire departments and community leaders," Temple stated. "These improvements contribute to safer homes and can decrease fire insurance premiums."

The Property Insurance Association of Louisiana assigns fire protection ratings from Class 1 to Class 10, with Class 1 indicating the highest protection level. These ratings, confirmed by the insurance commissioner, directly impact how insurers determine fire insurance premiums. Evaluation factors include emergency dispatch capabilities, personnel numbers, firefighting equipment, and water access.

An analysis using a standard $250,000 brick home with an HO-3 homeowners policy shows that these improved ratings could save homeowners approximately $894 annually on average. Notable savings include $166 in Mossville and North Westlake, $85 in Lacombe, $84 for North Sabine, $73 in Rapides Parish Fire District 3, and $69 for Jonesboro Fire District 1 in Jackson Parish.

Several communities have achieved Louisiana's highest fire protection rating. Lake Charles improved from a Class 2 to Class 1 rating in June, while St. Tammany Parish Fire District 2 attained Class 1 status in February. Other districts with upgraded ratings include areas in Beauregard, East Feliciana, Jefferson Davis, Jackson, Lafourche, Rapides, Sabine, Vermilion, West Carroll, Union, and Winn parishes.

Principal Assistant Chief Bryan Adams of the Department of Public Safety lauded local firefighters and leaders for their commitment. "They continuously step up, work diligently, and deliver exceptional community protection," Adams noted. "With ongoing training and support, we can expect continued positive outcomes."

The Department of Insurance advises homeowners in these districts to contact their insurance agents or carriers to inquire about potential premium reductions stemming from the improved fire protection ratings.
