Allstate Reports Strong Second Quarter Financial Performance
Allstate Corporation reported a strong surge in its second-quarter financial performance, reflecting broad growth across its insurance operations. The company witnessed an 11.8% rise in total revenue, reaching $18.6 billion, driven by increased net premiums, which rose by 2.6%. Net income was recorded at $3.2 billion, while the adjusted net income stood at $2.3 billion, or $8.99 per share. For the first six months of 2026, adjusted net income amounted to $5.1 billion, or $19.65 per share.
Underwriting results improved significantly, with property-liability underwriting income up nearly 57% to $2 billion. The combined ratio improved to 86.6%, thanks to reduced catastrophe losses and better results in auto and homeowners insurance. Net investment income also saw a notable increase of 33.8%, reaching $1 billion. These enhancements reflect effective risk management and strategic underwriting decisions.
Growth in Insurance Sectors
Jess Merten, President of Property-Liability, highlighted the growth in net premiums earned by 4% to $14.9 billion, driven by both auto and homeowners insurance sectors. Auto insurance posted an 83.3 combined ratio, improving by 2.7 points, while homeowners insurance achieved a 94.6 combined ratio, an advancement of 7.4 points. These improvements in underwriting were due to lower catastrophe losses and reserve re-estimates, though partially offset by an increased expense ratio.
Allstate continued its expansion in policy numbers, with policies in force rising by 3.8% to 215.9 million. Property-liability policies increased by 2.6%, while protection services policies grew by 4.1%. To support this growth, Allstate's Transformative Growth initiative leveraged a combination of Allstate agents, independent agents, and direct sales. Auto new-business volume surged to 2.3 million, a substantial increase from three years prior, with homeowners new business escalating by 46.8% to 411,000 policies.
Shareholder Returns and Strategic Investments
The company returned $1.3 billion to shareholders during the quarter through share repurchases, leaving $2.6 billion under its buyback authorization. The investment portfolio's performance also contributed positively, with trailing-12-month investment income climbing by more than 57% since 2022 to nearly $3.8 billion. Adjustments to equity holdings and bond-portfolio duration supported this growth.
Internally, Allstate appointed Chris Lown as the new Chief Financial Officer, while John Dugenske, Interim CFO, continues to lead investments and corporate strategy. CEO Tom Wilson reaffirmed the company’s commitment to expanding its property-liability market share while growing its service offerings.
Allstate remains focused on innovation and risk management, utilizing technology, such as the Large Language Intelligent Ecosystem, to enhance customer service and operational efficiency. Through strategic data usage and analytics, the company continues to prioritize cybersecurity and the protection of customer data, avoiding public large language models for internal operations.
