Illinois I-Cash Program Returns $307.8 Million in Unclaimed Funds

In Illinois, the I-Cash program successfully returned $307.8 million in unclaimed funds to over 567,000 individuals and organizations in the past year, according to State Treasurer Michael Frerichs. This initiative reduces the burden of regulatory compliance by facilitating automatic disbursements, minimizing the need for detailed claim filing.

The I-Cash program specializes in managing dormant assets such as safe deposit box contents, unpaid life insurance benefits, and inactive bank accounts. Treasurers are compelled by compliance requirements to ensure unclaimed property is returned to rightful owners or their heirs, irrespective of time elapsed.

The "Enhanced Money Match" system, launched in 2018, automates matches and disbursement of funds once information is electronically verified. To date, over $130 million has been returned to more than 870,000 beneficiaries, demonstrating the program’s efficiency in mitigating financial risk and maintaining fiduciary responsibility.

Among notable cases, a suburban Cook County resident received $1.37 from an estate, while another family received $1.2 million in stock shares from a trust. Program enhancements include a Spanish-language platform and a feature allowing users to notify relatives about potential unclaimed funds.

Residents are encouraged to check the I-Cash database biannually for unclaimed assets. The state prioritizes efficient strategies to reconnect individuals and entities with their lost property, aligning with the overarching goals of effective risk management and customer engagement.
