Chubb Limited Q2 2026 Financial Results: Strong Performance and Outlook
Chubb Limited reported an impressive P&C combined ratio of 83.8% for the second quarter of 2026, outperforming the US industry average of 92.9%. This achievement comes despite the strategic decision to reduce its focus on large account and E&S property business amid challenging market conditions. Underwriting income saw an 18.8% increase, reaching $1.94 billion, supported by a decrease in catastrophe losses from $630 million to $475 million compared to the previous year.
Core operating income rose by 14.6% to $2.84 billion, equating to $7.26 per share, thus exceeding the analyst prediction of $6.78. Despite a decrease in net income to $2.85 billion from $2.97 billion partly due to reduced investment gains, Chubb maintained stable financial health. Net premiums written increased by 3.6% to $14.7 billion, with P&C net premiums specifically up by 3.0%, or 6.3% when excluding large accounts and excess and surplus lines property.
The net catastrophe losses before tax amounted to $475 million, a drop from $630 million year-over-year. Adjusted net investment income reached a record high of $1.88 billion, reflecting an 11.4% increase. The investment portfolio expanded to $175 billion, marking a 9% growth over the past year.
Robust Performance and Growth Strategy
Chairman and CEO Evan G. Greenberg noted the robust performance across core income sectors, emphasizing a 17.1% rise in tangible book value per share. "Our core operating earnings of $2.8 billion demonstrate the strength of our P&C underwriting, investment, and life income," Greenberg stated. In North America, commercial P&C net premiums written fell by 2.3% to $5.59 billion, while middle market and small commercial segments witnessed an 8.9% increase.
Despite challenges in certain global property markets and overly soft underwriting conditions, Greenberg highlighted Chubb's strategic underwriting discipline aimed at preventing losses. He expressed confidence that current difficulties in the property sector are short-term, with the company's diverse portfolio contributing to its resilience and potential for future growth.
North America personal P&C net premiums written grew by 6.0% to $2.05 billion, and the combined ratio improved significantly to 67.3%. The agricultural insurance segment also experienced growth, with a 6% increase in net premiums written. Internationally, overseas general insurance net premiums written rose by 10.2% to $3.99 billion, driven by expansion in Latin America, Asia, and Europe.
For the first half of 2026, Chubb reported a net income of $5.17 billion, up 20.4% from the previous year, while core operating income reached $5.53 billion, marking a 39.4% increase. The company returned $1.37 billion to shareholders, including $979 million allocated to share repurchases and $395 million in dividends, with book and tangible book value per share rising by 12.3% and 17.1%, respectively.
Greenberg emphasized Chubb's resilience and ability to deliver consistent growth, stating, "We are an all-weather company," and expressed optimism about sustained strong growth in operating earnings and tangible book value.
