Telehealth Fraud Awareness for Seniors in July

The New York StateWide Senior Action Council, a well-established non-profit organization, highlights telehealth fraud as the significant Medicare Fraud of the Month for July. As part of the Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) program, this initiative assists older adults and caregivers in New York State to detect and combat healthcare fraud. Telehealth fraud not only impacts Medicare but also emphasizes the importance of regulatory compliance within healthcare services.

Maria Alvarez, who leads StateWide, underscores the value of telehealth when properly utilized. However, she cautions against potential fraud when telehealth services are not medically necessary or approved. Indicators of fraud include receiving unsolicited remote monitoring equipment or telehealth services, as well as billing Medicare for unnecessary telehealth claims. These issues highlight the significance of stringent risk management practices within telehealth services.

To minimize exposure to telehealth scams, seniors should consult with their doctors regarding telehealth use, carefully review their Medicare Summary Notices, and protect personal Medicare information. Any suspected fraud should be reported to the New York State Senior Medicare Patrol for further investigation. Alvarez warns against accepting "free" telehealth services or equipment linked to Medicare numbers, encouraging people to use their helpline or website for Medicare fraud assistance. StateWide continues to provide educational resources on Medicare, aiming to empower seniors in the fight against national Medicare fraud.
