Megan Cooper, spokesperson for AAA – The Auto Club Group, stressed that acquiring a driver's license is just the beginning, not a sign of full proficiency in handling all roadway situations. The first summer often involves solo driving, nighttime travel, and peer passengers, which test a new driver’s skills and judgment.

Impact of Early Experiences on Driving Safety

Statistics reveal that the initial months of driving are vital for establishing lifelong safe driving habits. In Tennessee, data from 2024 indicates 2,636 fatalities involving teen drivers, with many incidents occurring during summer. Cooper highlighted the importance of early decision-making in driving, noting that experience builds over time, but the early stages are paramount.

AAA data shows almost a third of summer traffic fatalities involve impaired drivers. In collaboration with Mothers Against Drunk Driving, AAA recommends arranging sober transportation if consuming alcohol or impairing substances. Before teens drive independently, AAA advises families to review their auto insurance policies. Cooper stated, “Insurance is part of preparing a new driver, not something to think about after an incident.”

AAA offers resources to assist families and teens in the driver education process, focusing on building confidence in navigating diverse driving scenarios.
