AI-Driven Authorization Letters Transition for Commercial Insurance Members
As of July 18, 2026, healthcare providers can securely access AI-driven prior authorization and referral decision letters for commercial insurance members via the Provider Correspondence Viewer, found within the Payer Spaces section of Availity Essentials. This platform centralizes decision letters, allowing for digital viewing and downloading.
Starting September 8, 2026, these authorization and referral approval letters for commercial members will no longer be sent via the U.S. Postal Service. While denial letters will still be mailed, they can also be accessed electronically via Availity Essentials. Decisions from third-party vendors will continue to be communicated through existing channels, emphasizing the importance of understanding diverse regulatory compliance requirements.
For Illinois Medicaid and Medicare Advantage members, the announcement of prior authorization and referral letter availability on Availity Essentials will occur at a later date. Providers should stay informed by checking News and Updates regularly. Providers outside Illinois handling authorizations for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) members can access the Provider Correspondence Viewer by integrating the appropriate payer region into their Availity profile.
Providers wishing to receive prior authorization and referral letters via USPS can opt out by emailing the Provider Education Consultants with specific instructions. For further assistance during this transition, healthcare providers should contact their Provider Education Consultants or refer to the Provider Correspondence Viewer for more information. Continuously verifying eligibility and benefits through Availity Essentials or another online tool prior to delivering services ensures accurate claims processing and risk management.
Please note, Availity, LLC, operates as a health information network facilitating electronic data exchange for the healthcare sector and provides administrative services to BCBSIL. However, BCBSIL does not endorse or verify third-party vendor products and services.
